Community Alert: Microsoft Windows 11


On Tuesday, October 5, 2021, Microsoft released a downloadable public version of Microsoft Windows 11. While new operating systems are exciting, they often have bugs, unknown complications, compatibility issues with other software, and security vulnerabilities. Often, academic software, like those used at Bates, may not be fully compatible until several months after the initial release of Microsoft Windows 11.


If you look at the settings on your computer, you may see the option to upgrade.

Until we can do more testing, we ask that you not upgrade your college-issued or personal computers to Microsoft Windows 11. 


Please Note: This update is different from the regular security patches that get sent to your computer and ask you to restart to apply them. Those are routine security patches and not a complete operating system upgrade. If you see an image like the one below, appear on your computer, go ahead and restart when convenient for you.
