Remove and Prevent Google Calendar Spam

Summary

This knowledge base article explains how to identify and remove suspicious Google Calendar events that may be added automatically as part of a spam or phishing campaign. It also outlines recommended settings changes to help prevent unwanted invitations from appearing on your calendar in the future and reinforces when to contact the IT Service Desk if credentials may have been compromised.

Body

If you receive a suspicious Google Calendar event such as “Request for Review and Signature: Updated Vendor List,” do not interact with any links or attachments. Instead, follow the steps below to report and remove the event.

Note: If you accidentally clicked a link or entered your Bates credentials, contact the IT Service Desk immediately.

Report and Delete a Spam Event from your Computer

  • Open Google Calendar in your web browser.
  • Click on the suspicious event.
  • Select the three vertical dots (More actions).
  • Click Report as spam.

This removes the event from your calendar and notifies Google.

Note: If you do not see the Report as spam option, simply delete the event and confirm your calendar settings are updated as described above.

Prevent Future Calendar Spam

To reduce unwanted invitations being automatically added:

  • Open Google Calendar.
  • Click the gear icon and select Settings.
  • Select Event settings.
  • Change “Add invitations to my calendar” to:
    • Only if the sender is known, or
    • When I respond to the invitation in email.

Disable Automatic Events from Gmail

  • Open Google Calendar.
  • Click the gear icon and select Settings.
  • In Settings, scroll to Events from Gmail.
  • Uncheck “Show events from Gmail.”

This prevents events from being automatically created based on email content.
