Instructions on how to connect a SmartDevice to Bates WiFi.

Body

Bates College offers access to 3 Wireless (WiFi) Networks for individuals to choose from when on campus.

Bates Secure – Bates Secure is the primary WiFi Network for Bates Faculty, Staff, and Students and offers full WPA2 encryption.

Bates Open – The Bates Open WiFi Network is available for guests of the college. Bates Open is also used for connecting gaming consoles, Apple TVs, Smart Devices, etc.

Eduroam – Bates Faculty, Staff, and Students visiting institutions in the US and around the world may connect to the Eduroam WiFi Network at participating institutions using their Bates College Username and Password. In turn, visitors to Bates from participating schools may access the Internet with the credentials provided by their home institutions.

Smart Home Devices, such as smart lights, smart plugs, smart assistants (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomePod) often will not work on campus. Unfortunately, WiFi Printers are not supported on campus. We recommend connecting your printer directly to your computer or utilize a PaperCat printer located in various locations throughout campus.

You will want to begin this process from a computer that is already connected to the Internet.

  • From a web browser, such as Google Chrome login to https://clearpass.bates.edu with your Bates Username and Password
  • Click on Create Device
  • Complete the following fields to complete the registration process:

    • *Device Name: Provide a unique, but descriptive name for your console/device.
      • Example: YourBatesUsername PlayStation 5
      • If your device does not have a unique name, it may not get registered. If you use something like Tom’s PlayStation 5 and someone else has already registered and named their PlayStation 4 as Tom’s PlayStation 4, your device will not get connected.

  • Shut down your console/device.
  • Disconnect it from the power source for 15 minutes.
  • Reconnect it, and you should now be receiving an IP Address.
