Bates College provides access to its wired network for individuals who prefer or require a direct, physical network connection while on campus.
The wired network provides a reliable, secure connection and is commonly available in residence halls, where Ethernet ports are installed. Students may choose to use the wired network for improved stability and faster speeds, or to support devices that perform best with a wired connection, such as gaming consoles, computers, and other network-dependent equipment.
Note: To use the wired network, students must connect their gaming console, computer, and other network-dependent equipment to an active Ethernet port in their residence hall using a compatible network cable. Ethernet ports are not active by default and must be enabled by request. Click on the Port Activation – Student Residence request form to request activation of your Ethernet port.
Note: You will want to begin this process from a computer that is already connected to the Bates WiFi. If you do not register your device using the steps below, you will need to register every 24 hours, and your connection may be limited.
Step 1:

Step 2:
Note: In order to find the MAC Address for your specific gaming console, computer, and other network-dependent equipment, perform a Google Search with the keywords: “How to find MAC Address Wireless (Console/device name)”
Complete the fields below to register your device:
- Device Name: Provide a unique, but descriptive name for your device.
- Example: YourBatesUsername PlayStation 5
- If your device does not have a unique name, it may not get registered. If you use something like Tom’s PlayStation 5 and someone else has already registered and named their PlayStation 4 as Tom’s PlayStation 4, your device will not get connected.
- MAC Address: Enter the MAC Address** of the device you want to connect to the Bates Wired Network.
- Example: 00-14-22-01-23-45
- AirGroup: Leave at the Default Setting.
- Click on the Create Device button.

Step 3:
- Logout when you have completed the registration process.

Note: Your device is now registered and can connect to the Bates wired network.
If your device is not receiving an IP Address and is not connecting to the Bates Wired Network:
- Shut down your console/device/computer.
- Wait for 15 minutes.
- Power it back on, and you should now be receiving an IP Address.
If your device does not receive an IP Address after following the steps above, please contact the IT Service Desk for further assistance.
